2.4 million euros for innovative lignin technology

Hamburg, 20. August 2024

Lignopure, a start-up founded at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), has developed a ground-breaking technology to utilise waste materials from the pulp and bioethanol industry. The company replaces harmful ingredients in everyday products with environmentally friendly alternatives. Founders Joana Gil and Wienke Reynolds developed this technology during their research at TUHH and founded Lignopure in 2019, which is now a leader in the use of lignin as a sustainable raw material.

NBank Capital participates

Lignopure recently raised €2.4 million in growth capital to expand its product range and optimise production processes. The financing round was led by NBank Capital, accompanied by other investors and existing shareholders. The company plans to offer high-quality lignin-based solutions for various industries in the life sciences sector and thus contribute to the transformation towards bio-based raw materials.

The start-up is focussing primarily on applications in the life sciences sector. Its first commercial product, the natural cosmetic ingredient LignoBase, is produced in its own demonstration plant. The patented technology, which was developed at the TUHH, was taken over by Lignopure, further developed and successfully scaled up. Thanks to support from the Startup Port and other funding programmes, the company was able to grow quickly and establish several sales partnerships.
