Become a civil and environmental engineer and help to shape our future in a climate- and resource-friendly way. With the study program "Civil and Environmental Engineering", we offer a unique combination of the two closely related disciplines of civil engineering and environmental engineering, which should always be thought of together:
Civil engineering is considered the oldest discipline of engineering and deals with the design, construction and maintenance of residential, office and administrative buildings, industrial buildings, bridges, roads, railroads, tunnels, airfields, harbors, canals, dikes and dams.
Environmental engineering deals with the design and construction of utility and waste management systems and urban infrastructure, the management of water bodies, groundwater, wastewater and waste, and the fundamental issues of environmental protection and sustainability. By combining specialist knowledge, technical and communication skills, we train engineers who think in an interdisciplinary and solution-oriented manner.

What characterizes this study program?

The combination of civil and environmental engineering has a long and very successful tradition at the TU Hamburg. The teaching content of classical civil engineering is already complemented in a targeted manner in the bachelor's education by additional knowledge and skills in the field of environmental engineering. Numerous practice-oriented excursions in the Hamburg metropolitan region round off the very wide range of subject-specific teaching. Innovative teaching methods bring the practice of civil and environmental engineering into the courses. The bachelor thesis as the first scientific paper is gladly done in cooperation with research projects and practice partners. The TU Hamburg has numerous Erasmus-Plus partnerships with European partner universities and supports study abroad. It also maintains a wide network of cooperations with companies, authorities, research institutions and other practical partners. A special expression of these cooperations are several prizes awarded by the construction industry to our students. The TU Hamburg stands for very good support of its students and the interlocking of teaching, research and career preparation.

How is the program structured?

The study program in Civil and Environmental Engineering focuses on basic education. The focus is on both the methodological and theoretical foundations of civil and environmental engineering. At the beginning of the program, mathematical and scientific subjects predominate and the first basics are taught, for example, in building materials science and construction theory.

In the fourth semester, students choose one of the specializations "Civil Engineering", "Water and Environment" or "Transport and Mobility", depending on their preferences. In the master's program, this specialization can then be further expanded consecutively.

In addition to the specialization, students can also choose from our non-technical courses (6 LP), which include language courses, for example.

The bachelor's thesis as the first scientific work is carried out in the specialization in cooperation with research projects and practice partners. The TU Hamburg also has numerous Erasmus-Plus partnerships with European partner universities and supports studying abroad.

What job can I take?

And of course you can also start a master's degree. With the bachelor's degree program, you are optimally prepared for further master's studies. A seamless transition to subsequent master's programs at the TU Hamburg is possible.

What are the requirements?

For the study in Civil and Environmental Engineering a general university entrance qualification or a comparable degree as well as sufficient knowledge of German is required.

A 10-week basic internship is also a prerequisite for admission. Proof of the internship is not mandatory until the fourth semester. However, we recommend that you complete it before taking up your studies.

How do I apply?

You can apply annually for the winter semester in the period from June 1st to July 15th. For this you need a university entrance qualification (usually Abitur) and sufficiently good German language skills (level B2.2). We conduct an online application procedure.

Can I include a semester abroad?

Both study and internship abroad are possible. These are not included in the curriculum or mandatory. Therefore, it is recommended to pursue these plans, for example, in a consecutive master's program.

Can I study in the dual program?

Yes, you can! All Bachelor of Science degree programs at the TU Hamburg can be studied dual. Since 2003, the Technical University of Hamburg has also offered its Bachelor's and Master's degree programs in a dual study variant in cooperation with more than 50 cooperating companies.

The study concept combines complete university studies with professional practice in the engineering field. The students are employed by one of our cooperating companies and, as cohorts across study programs, represent the entire spectrum of engineering sciences.

The program is rounded off by seminars on the development of social skills, so that graduates can face the challenges of the working world in a responsible manner.

How is campus life?

The TU Hamburg is one of the youngest universities in Germany. On the clearly arranged and cozy campus you will quickly get to know your new fellow students and in spring and summer numerous seating areas and green spaces invite you to linger together in the fresh air. In an almost familiar atmosphere, we celebrate our summer festival every year in June, where our TU's own beer brewing group "Campusperle" also offers its creations. Where can I find the relevant regulations?

All modalities for admission to the Bachelor's program are regulated in the Statutes on Studies.

The framework conditions for examinations at TU Hamburg are defined by the General Study and Examination Regulations (ASPO) and the Subject-Specific Study and Examination Regulations (FSPO). The Module Handbook describes the concrete design of the modules provided for in the curriculum and their learning objectives. They also provide information on content, recommended prior knowledge and literature for preparation.
