What characterizes this study program?

As a graduate of the International Master Program Mechatronics, you are able to solve complex problems related to mechatronic systems, their behavior and design, robotics, intelligent and autonomous systems, automation and simulation, etc. You will be able to act methodically, to organize smaller projects, to select new technologies and scientific methods and to advance these further, if necessary.

The program is very interdisciplinary. It is characterized by the fact that it has a high proportion of electives, allowing you to study in a highly individualized way.

The technical electives include courses mostly from the School of Mechanical Engineering and the School of Electrical Engineering.

All compulsory lectures as well as most of the electives are in English. Proof of German language proficiency is not required.

Hamburg University of Technology and the city of Hamburg have many advantages: We have a harbor, we have logistics and we are the third largest civil aviation location in the world. International and national corporations from the mechanical, electrical and mechatronic sector are located In or near Hamburg. This Is reflected In the program, the research within the Institutes as well as your personal experience.

How is the program structured?

All modules in the first semester are compulsory. This helps you, especially if you are from abroad, to familiarize yourselves with the university and culture.

Afterwards you can broadly personalize your studies due to the high number and variety of elective courses.

All compulsory and nearly all elective courses are In English.

Next to 30 Credit Points (CP) compulsory courses in the first semester, the second and third semester consists of:

  • 36 CP elective courses
  • Nontechnical elective complementary courses (catalogue) (6 CP)
  • Complementary courses business and management (catalogue) (6CP)
  • as well as a student research project planned for the third semester (12 CP), which can also be done outside the university.

You write you final thesis (30 CP) In the fourth semester, either with an Institute or outside the university.

What job can I take?

The International Master course "Mechatronics" prepares graduates for a wide range of job profiles in mechatronics engineering. They have a multifaceted knowledge of methods for interdisciplinary topics and can work in multiply areas, e.g. System Design, Intelligent Systems or Robotics.

Graduates may decide for direct entry into companies or to take up academic careers, e.g. Ph.D. studies, in universities or other research institutions. In companies they can take up jobs as specialists or subsequently qualify for demanding management tasks in the technical area (e.g. project, group, or team leader; R&D director).

The program is designed to be universal and allows graduates to work in a variety of different industrial sectors and with different projects.

What are the requirements?

Applicants should hold a Bachelor's or equivalent degree in mechatronics engineering or mechanical engineering and must show a very good previous academic performance as well as sufficient proficiency in English by passing TOEFL with a minimum score of 577 (paper-based) / 90 (internet-based) or IELTS with a minimum score of 6.5.

Please note: The TOEFL ITP is not accepted by TUHH.

Additionally there are specific requirements for the international Master's program, as can be found here.

As can be seen from those requirements, we expect applicants to have e.g. 30 CP worth of courses covering fundamental mathematics - the equivalent of one semester. Additionally, we request profound knowledge in engineering mechanics as well as control theory and fundamentals of mechatronics.

How do I apply?

You can apply annually for the winter semester in the period from the December 1st to March 1st. For this you need a Bachelor’s or equivalent degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering or related fields (see the subject-specific requirements here). In addition, you need sufficiently good English language skills. You can find more infomation about the English language requirements and other documents needed for the application here. We conduct an online application procedure.

How to start?

To make it easier for you to start your studies at the TUHH, you will find various offers here:

  •     New@TUHH provides you with information on starting your studies, registration at the library and at the computer center.
  •     The Student Counseling Center (put link) offers an orientation session for incoming students of the German-language master's program.
Can I include a semester abroad?

A stay abroad is possible, especially in the 2nd or 3rd semester.

Can I study in the dual program?

Yes, you can! All Master of Science degree programs at the TU Hamburg can be studied dual. Since 2003, the Technical University of Hamburg has also offered its Bachelor's and Master's degree programs in a dual study variant in cooperation with more than 50 cooperating companies.

The study concept combines complete university studies with professional practice in the engineering field. The students are employed by one of our cooperating companies and, as cohorts across study programs, represent the entire spectrum of engineering sciences.

The program is rounded off by seminars on the development of social skills, so that graduates can face the challenges of the working world in a responsible manner.

You can find more information about the dual study program at the TU Hamburg here: https://dual.tuhh.de/

What are my options to do a PhD?

The institutes involved in the program each offer the opportunity to pursue a doctorate. Graduates of the International Master Mechatronics can choose from a wide range of topics across multiple research areas, highlighting specific institutes would be pointless.

How is campus life?

The TU Hamburg is one of the youngest universities in Germany. On the clearly arranged and cozy campus you will quickly get to know your new fellow students and in spring and summer numerous seating areas and green spaces invite you to linger together in the fresh air. In an almost familiar atmosphere, we celebrate our summer festival every year in June, where our TU's own beer brewing group "Campusperle" also offers its creations. Of course, you can also get involved in our numerous AGs, which also organize regular events, e.g. screenings of the cinema AG, concerts of SingING or SymphonING. Of particular interest to Data Science students are also the HULKs, who regularly participate in international robot soccer championships, for example.

If you decide to study at TUHH, you also decide to study in Hamburg, the metropolis on the Elbe, Germany's second largest city and certainly its most beautiful. Hamburg combines urbanity and maritime life and is also Germany's greenest city with over a million inhabitants. You will never get bored here: rowing on the canals during the day or jogging in the city park, sunset on the Elbe, a concert in the Elbphilharmonie or a pub night on the Schanze and the fish market at dawn. Here you will find everything for the adventurous, but also numerous quiet places to pause. Together with your fellow students, you will certainly explore Hamburg and its treasures quickly and get to know your new favorite place.

Where can I find the relevant regulations (admission, module handbook,...)?

All modalities for admission to the Master's program are regulated in the Statutes on Studies.

The framework conditions for examinations at TUHH are defined by the General Study and Examination Regulations (ASPO) and the Subject-Specific Study and Examination Regulations (FSPO). The Module Handbook describes the concrete design of the modules provided for in the curriculum and their learning objectives. They also provide information on content, recommended prior knowledge and literature for preparation.

All regulations relevant to the study program can be found here.

How do I start my career?
