Lufthansa Technik AG

Creation of a web-based project portfolio management tool

About Lufthansa Technik
Lufthansa Technik is the worldwide leading independent provider of maintenance, repair, overhaul and modification services for civil aircraft. With tailored maintenance programs and state-of-the-art repair methods we ensure the durable reliability and availability of our customers’ aircraft fleets. We are an internationally-licensed maintenance, production and development company with eight business units: Maintenance, Overhaul, Component Services, Engine Services, Landing Gear Services, VIP Services, Original Equipment Innovation and Digital Fleet Solutions. With more than 26,000 employees and over 30 international subsidiaries, the Lufthansa Technik Group offers its approximately 800 customers worldwide a complete range of services round about aircraft technology.
This project is set and supervised by the IT division „Material Solutions“. This department is in charge of IT solutions which support material and logistic processes of Lufthansa Technik and its customers.

Starting Situation
Working in projects has become a regular feature in enterprises such as Lufthansa Technik. This includes internal transformation projects as well as customer projects. The increasing digitalization of business sectors leads to the simultaneous execution of several projects. The division “Material Solution” is processing 50-100 projects at the same time. This causes the need for an extensive project portfolio management to monitor these projects monetarily and regarding their strategic impact.
For a long time, there was no tool to offer a project overview with controlling-relevant data. In 2017, a MS Access-Tool was introduced. This prototypical application was created as a first step to face these challenges.

Problem Formulation
Due to technical limitations of MS Access, the mentioned tool does not meet the IT policy. It is furthermore vulnerable for errors and is not actively used by the management.
This unavailability of a project portfolio overview leads to inefficient decision making since necessary data has to be collected manually. The dialogue between management and project management is thus hampered.
The management has to rely on various and partly incomplete information sources to gain insight into project statuses and figures.

Project Aim(s)
Aim of this agile project is the conceptualization, design and implementation of a web-based project portfolio management tool. This tool should enable the management to gain an extensive overview about the currently running projects, their scope and current status.
Project managers shall be able to plan their projects within the tool. They will be able to keep their projects up to date and transparent.
The tool enables a standardized overview of current projects. Furthermore, information about the status, persons in charge and more are provided. This makes sure that the project portfolio is strategically balanced. Also a prioritization of projects can be made much more objectively.
