Applications are open! Apply until 15 January for German-language Master’s programs and selected English-language Master’s programs starting in the summer semester.

Energy Systems, Master of Science

Energy Systems is the right degree program for anyone who wants to contribute to the energy transition. In this study program, the investigation of individual components for efficient and environmentally friendly cooling or heating, energy storage, but also the analysis of complex energy systems up to the dynamic simulation of sector coupling (gas, heating, cooling, electricity) plays a decisive role.

So, if you enjoy experimental and numerical investigations in the research field of applied thermodynamics and energy technology, you should choose the master's program in Energy Systems.

A good understanding of physics and a certain affinity for computer science (programming, data analysis, ...) are helpful before starting the program, but will also be trained during the study.

What characterizes this study program?

The aim of the master's program in Energy Systems is to familiarize students with different technologies for energy conversion, energy distribution and energy application. It must be taken into account that energy technology is a cross-sectional subject that touches practically all areas of technology. The Master of Science program should therefore also teach students the ability to recognize interrelationships in complex systems.

Graduates of the Master of Science in Energy Systems are able to apply the acquired specialist knowledge to complex energy technology problems. They are able to independently familiarize themselves with new issues. Processes can be analyzed, abstracted and modeled using scientific methods and also documented. They can evaluate data and results and develop innovative solution strategies from them. You will be able to discuss problems in a team and optimize them if necessary.

In addition to basic research projects in energy technology, the close connection to northern German industry (energy suppliers, shipping industry, Airbus, ...) also results in a wide range of industry-related research projects in which students can participate and establish direct contact with practical applications.

How is the program structured?

The master's program in Energy Systems is structured into a core qualification area with predominantly mathematical/physical fundamentals and a specialization option in the area of energy systems or marine engineering. In addition to operation and management and non-technical modules, there are three compulsory modules (energy systems specialization) or four compulsory modules (marine engineering specialization).

In the core qualification area, in-depth physical/mathematical and current engineering content of energy technology and marine mechanical engineering is addressed. In addition, in the compulsory modules "Thermal Energy Systems" and in the "Student Research Project Energy Systems" application and research-oriented problems are dealt with and in the "Practical Course Energy Technology" different experiments are carried out in small groups and competences for critical analysis and evaluation of measurement data and experimental results are taught.

In the context of the "Studienarbeit Energietechnik" and the "Praktikum Energietechnik", the independent processing of problems, the structuring of solution approaches and the written documentation are promoted.

What job can I take?

The program is broad in terms of content due to the extensive range of basic and application-oriented modules and prepares graduates for challenging and managerial tasks in industry and science. The field of work includes, for example, planning, construction, commissioning, maintenance and sales of energy technology plants and systems, but also consulting and calculations in terms of flow simulations or dynamic simulations of large energy systems (sector coupling).

Due to the broad orientation of the degree program, a challenging job is possible in very different areas of energy technology, marine engineering, but also in the field of general mechanical engineering and vehicle and aircraft technology.

What are the requirements?

Is the master's program in Energy Systems suitable for me?

Of the following five questions, at least 3 should be answered with "yes" in this case.

  • Do I want to contribute to the energy transition?
  • Am I interested in mechanical engineering-oriented issues in energy technology?
  • Do I have a good understanding of physics?
  • Am I prepared to deal with complex issues?
  • Do I enjoy working on solutions in a team?

You must also meet the specific requirements for the master's program!

How do I apply?

You can apply annually for the winter semester in the period from June 1st to July 15th and for the summer semester in the period from December 1st to January 15th. For this you need a Bachelor's degree and sufficiently good German language skills. We conduct an online application procedure.

How to start?

To make it easier for you to start your studies at the TUHH, you will find various offers here:

  •     New@TUHH provides you with information on starting your studies, registration at the library and at the computer center.
  •     The Student Counseling Center offers an orientation session for incoming students of the German-language master's programs
Can I include a semester abroad?

A stay abroad is possible within the framework of the study program and is offered in the 3rd semester (winter semester). In the 3rd semester, there is only one compulsory module, "Studienarbeit Energietechnik", which can usually be completed abroad. Modules that are completed abroad and fit the course of study will be recognized. The participating institutes are happy to help with the arrangement of e.g. student research projects at universities abroad.

Can I study in the dual program?

Yes, you can! All Master of Science degree programs at the TU Hamburg can be studied dual. Since 2003, the Technical University of Hamburg has also offered its Bachelor's and Master's degree programs in a dual study variant in cooperation with more than 50 cooperating companies.

The study concept combines complete university studies with professional practice in the engineering field. The students are employed by one of our cooperating companies and, as cohorts across study programs, represent the entire spectrum of engineering sciences.

The program is rounded off by seminars on the development of social skills, so that graduates can face the challenges of the working world in a responsible manner.

You can find more information about the dual study program at the TU Hamburg here: https://dual.tuhh.de/

What are my options to do a PhD?

The research focus "Environmental & Energy Systems" offers graduates of the Energy Technology program excellent opportunities for doctoral studies at the TUHH. For further advice, please contact the head of the study program!

How is campus life?

The TU Hamburg is one of the youngest universities in Germany. On the clearly arranged and cozy campus you will quickly get to know your new fellow students and in spring and summer numerous seating areas and green spaces invite you to linger together in the fresh air. In an almost familiar atmosphere, we celebrate our summer festival every year in June, where our TU's own beer brewing group "Campusperle" also offers its creations. Of course, you can also get involved in our numerous AGs, which also organize regular events, e.g. screenings of the cinema AG, concerts of SingING or SymphonING. Of particular interest to Data Science students are also the HULKs, who regularly participate in international robot soccer championships, for example.

If you decide to study at TUHH, you also decide to study in Hamburg, the metropolis on the Elbe, Germany's second largest city and certainly its most beautiful. Hamburg combines urbanity and maritime life and is also Germany's greenest city with over a million inhabitants. You will never get bored here: rowing on the canals during the day or jogging in the city park, sunset on the Elbe, a concert in the Elbphilharmonie or a pub night on the Schanze and the fish market at dawn. Here you will find everything for the adventurous, but also numerous quiet places to pause. Together with your fellow students, you will certainly explore Hamburg and its treasures quickly and get to know your new favorite place.
