Language proficiency

The Bachelor's programs are taught in German predominantly. But there are also some lectures given in English. Please read and note the following information.

Please note that the TUHH unfortunately does not offer preparatory German or English courses.

... for the application / admission

(Attention: Proof of a higher level of language proficiency is required for enrolment.)

  • By the application deadline, proof of at least German language skills at the level of the successfully completed B 2.2 examination must be provided for all Bachelor's degree programmes. (Exception: Bachelor's degree programme Engineering Science See below!)

The language examination must have been taken according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and must not be older than 2 years. German nationals who did not obtain their high school-leaving certificate at a German school must also provide proof of language proficiency.

Alternatively, a language certificate required for enrolment can of course already be submitted during the application process.

An admission without a proof of this language level until application deadline isn`t possible.

... for the enrolment

Proof of sufficient German language skills for all Bachelor's degree programmes (exception: Engineering Science / see below) for enrolment must be provided by the end of the enrolment period through the following examinations:

  • the "Test Deutsch als Fremdsprache (TestDaF)" with 16 points (no test part under 3) and not older than 2 years
  • the certificate "telc Deutsch C1 Hochschule" not older than two years.
  • a "Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH)" pass from a German university with an average DSH-2 grade at least not older than two years
  • a certification or graduation certificate issued by a German "Studienkolleg"; 
  • a degree certificate (of a course of study with German as language of instruction) issued by a German university or university of applied science (Fachhochschule);
  • the "Deutsches Sprachdiplom" (Stage II) awarded by the "Kulturministerkonferenz";
  • the "Goethe-Zertifikat C2: Großes Deutsches Sprachdiplom" awarded by the Goethe Institute;
  • a university entrance qualification gained at a German school abroad or a regular school in the Federal Republic of Germany (German „Abitur“ or „Realschlabschluss“
  • a completed vocational training of at least 2 years in Germany

German nationals who did not obtain their school-leaving certificate at a German school must also provide the relevant language certificate

Please inform yourself in time about the offer of language examinations and when they will take place. Enrolment at the TUHH cannot take place if the passed test cannot be proven by the end of the enrolment deadline. A confirmation of registration or participation for a test is not sufficient for enrolment.

Enrolment without a proof of this language level until application deadline isn`t possible.

You should attend a suitable language course in your own country to ensure that your proficiency in German is adequate. German language courses are offered at many foreign universities, Goethe Institutes and German cultural institutes abroad. Details are available from German diplomatic and consular representations.


Special information for "Engineering Science (ES)"

The Engineering Science course is an English-language or bilingual (German and English) course, depending on the specialisation. English and/ or German language skills must therefore be proven for enrolment.

concerning German language ( for specialisation 'Biomedical Engineering', 'Electrical Engineering', 'Mechanical Engineering'):

  • TestDaF with 12 points (no test part under 3) not older than 2 years
  • a "Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang (DSH)" pass from a German university with an average DSH-1 grade at least not older than two years
  • in addition, all of the above-mentioned language examinations, which can be verified for all Bachelor's degree programmes at the TUHH.

German nationals who did not obtain their school-leaving certificate at a German school must also provide the relevant language certificate

concerning English language:

After being admitted every prospective student is expected to show proficiency in English by taking one of the following exams up to the enrolment deadline:

  • TOEFL (score 577 (PB) , 90 (IB) or 22 (revised paper-delivered) at least). The TUHH institution code is 8165, a department code is not required. The TOEFL ITP will not be accepted by TUHH.
  • IELTS-Academics (score 6.5 at least);
  • Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English;
  • Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English;
  • "telc English C1";
  • "UNIcert English level III";
  • only for students of TUHH:  one of the TUHH's courses of study with German as language of instruction: If you like to change into ES you can prove your English knowledge by attending and finishing the TUHH-C1.2-English course with success.

Any certificate may not be older than two years. And only the above-mentioned certificates will be accepted by TUHH, without exceptions. If you can't prove one of the above-mentioned examinations, enrolment will be refused.

Special information for „Computer Science (CS)“ and "Data Science (DS)"

CS and DS are bilingual bachelor courses. Every applicant has to prove sufficient knowledge in German and English.

concerning German language:

If you do not have a German higher education entrance qualification, the above-mentioned language certificates apply to you, which must be proven for the application and enrolment of all Bachelor's degree programmes. (See further up the page.)

concerning English language:

for application/ admission

No proof of English is required for application/admission. Please note the requirements for enrolment.

After being admitted every prospective student is expected to show proficiency in English by taking one of the following exams up to enrolment deadline:

  • a valid TOEFL (score 72 IB). The TUHH instituion code is 8165. A department code is not required. The TOEFL ITP will not be accepted by TUHH.
  • IELTS-Academics (score 5.0 at least)
  • Cambridge First Certificate in English (FCE)
  • telc English B2.2
  • UNIcert English level II
  • an International Baccalaureate (IB) from an English language school

None of the certificates may be older than 2 years.
