Automated Component Landing in Offshore Wind Construction

Description of the company

The project is provided and supervised by the Offshore department of Siemens Gamesa.

Initial situation
During erection of wind turbines with cranes different components need to be landed and secured precisely (Tower, Nacelle and Blades). These lifting and landing processes are very time critical and delays can result in high cost as these operations take place offshore, sometimes more than 100km far from the coast.

Problem
Due to the conditions offshore there are several factors influencing the clearance and duration of these processes, e.g. wind, rain, fog and darkness during night operations. Currently these processes rely on manual handling and experience of the operators while in other industries automatic crane operations are used, e.g. for container handling at modern harbor terminals or in the paper and bulk industry.

Aims of the project
The aim of the project is a screening of different available technical solutions, an analysis how those technologies could be adapted and a proposal (incl. a small business case) on the best solution for Siemens Gamesa. This could reach from a computer based decision support system to a (semi) automated component landing system for the cranes.

Scopes

  • Understand the use case in detail and identify suitable solutions, e.g. from other industries
  • Evaluate those technical solutions for the described use case
  • Detail out technical implementation / adaption (incl. a small business case)
  • Potentially: Develop a Mock-up / Test a Prototype on a vessel / crane

Target group (students)
For this project, we are looking for highly motivated students in civil, mechanical, electrical and industrial engineering as well as computer science. However, other disciplines are also very welcome. Most importantly, you should enjoy taking initiative and responsibility for a project.
