German language courses for Students in international degree programs (in cooperation with IBH e.V.)

Are you studying an English-language Master's or Bachelor's degree program at TUHH? Or maybe you're a Ph.D. student eager to deepen your German language skills in specific subject areas? Then you've come to the right place!

Every semester, the TUHH offers semester-long German courses for international students in international degree programs at different levels with our partner IBH.

The successful attendance of at least one course is a prerequisite for students in the English-language degree programs to graduate!

Course programme and dates

In cooperation with IBH, the TUHH offers German courses at various levels for international students on English-language degree programmes during the semester.

The courses are free of charge for TUHH students and take place on Wednesdays from 3 to 6.15 pm during lecture periods.

We also offer thematic courses that prepare students for their career entry, job search and the job market in German-speaking countries. These courses are also open to Ph.D. students.

Thematic courses in summer semester 2025:

  • Deutsch für den Berufseinstieg: Der Kurs vermittelt Deutschkenntnisse für den Berufseinstieg, einschließlich Fachbegriffen, arbeitsbezogener Kommunikation und Textproduktion, um auf berufliche Situationen wie Meetings, E-Mails und Vorstellungsgespräche vorzubereiten.
Previous knowledge of German at level B1 is required.
  • Arbeitsmarktanalyse Deutschland – was passt zu mir?
Previous knowledge of German at level B2 is required.

The thematic courses are offered as part of the FitING in Germany program.

Who can participate?

These courses are only available to international students in English-language degree programs (international Master's degree programs as well as the Bachelor's degree program Engineering Science/Advanced Materials)

Thematic courses, which prepare students for their career entry, job search and the job market in German-speaking countries, are also open to Ph.D. students.

Exchange students are not eligible to participate. German courses are available for international exchange students (e.g. via the ERASMUS programme) in cooperation with the VHS. Click here for the German courses for international exchange students.

Registration / Placements

Registration does not take place via TUNE/StudIP, but via an online form that you will find on this website about three weeks before the start of lectures. Please note that places are limited.

If you want to join the courses for the first time please take the Cornelsen Online-test which is suitable up to level B1. From level B2 you should take the placement test on http://www.sprachtest.de/.

Are you new to TUHH and do not yet have a matriculation number? No problem, please enter the number '99999' in the corresponding field.

Credit points and recognition

Students on English-language study programs are required by the Subject-Specific Examination Regulations to provide one-off proof of 4 credits earned by taking part in a German course (IBH). (This does not apply to master’s students who have passed a German exam that exempts them from this requirement in accordance with Annex 1 to the Study Regulations.) The missing 2 credits for the non-technical mandatory course module may be selected from the NTA course offering at the TUHH. Language courses other than German cannot be credited. After completing the compulsory German course, a further German course at TUHH is an additional option, which is recognised with 2 credits. However, this additional German course can only be counted as a non-technical elective if it is at a higher proficiency level than the previous one.

Please note that the thematic courses (Deutsch für den Berufseinstieg; Arbeitssuche in Deutschland: Stellensuche, Bewerbung, Lebenslauf, Vorstellungsgespräch; Wissenschaftliches Schreiben und Präsentieren; Arbeitsmarktanalyse Deutschland – was passt zu mir?)  cannot currently be credited as a second German course in the NTA modul.

The IBH German courses are not graded.

Further detailed information on the recognition of language courses can be found here.

Exam Registration

If you wish to take an examination in order to acquire credit points, you must register for this examination in TUNE. No credit points can be gained without registering for an exam. Exam registration takes place exclusively during a two-week period. The registration period will be announced in good time. During this period, you can register for your exams in TUNE under My studies > Planner of studies with Module plan. You can find detailed instructions here.

These courses are only available to international students in English-language degree programs. Click here for German courses for international exchange students (e.g. through the ERASMUS program).
