Meeting passenger needs and future regulations: The accessible lavatory
Description of the company
Airbus is an international pioneer in the aerospace industry. We are a leader in designing,
manufacturing and delivering aerospace products, services and solutions to customers on a
global scale. We aim for a better-connected, safer and more prosperous world.
Situation
The number of people with disabilities is dramatically increasing. Currently ~16% of world's population is affected by different types of disabilities. Persons with disabilities are able to travel. But they are not able to travel on an equal level. Accessible cabin design is a socio-ethical responsibility, legal obligation as well as a market opportunity.
Problem
The lavatory poses significant challenges for people with disabilities. For those with reduced mobility who require assistance, the limited space makes it difficult to enter the lavatory and close the door, compromising privacy. Blind individuals struggle with orientation and the use of features, often needing to touch surfaces that may not be clean. Deaf people face difficulties due to the lack of access to critical audible information like crew announcements during flight in this enclosed space. Additionally, new regulations on lavatory accessibility necessitate prompt action to address these issues effectively.
Aims of the project
This project aims to develop features that enhance the accessibility of lavatories for individuals with disabilities, ensuring compliance with new regulations and improving overall user experience.
