Sustainable Surfaces

Description of the company

Airbus is an international pioneer in the aerospace industry. We are a leader in designing, manufacturing and delivering aerospace products, services and solutions to customers on a
global scale. Our pioneering spirit pushes us to explore, innovate and reach new heights in the aerospace sector. We pioneer sustainable aerospace for a safe and united world.

Situation

● According to the Airbus vision of the future cabin, cabin walls can be replaced through structural optimized lightweight solutions (e.g. biomimetic designs, lattice structures, …)
● Lightweight cabin walls have open surfaces with holes or cavities
● Surfaces are in contact with passengers and part of the visual and haptic experience in the aircraft

Problem

● Cabin walls need closed surfaces → holes/cavities need to be closed
● State-of-the-Art cabin walls have glued outer layers (“decor foils”)
● Separability & ecological impact improveable

Aims of the project

● Develop a material catalog for “Sustainable Surfaces”, usable in commercial aircraft cabins
● Optimize the ecological impact of cabin wall surfaces
● Show new solutions for a vibrant passenger experience (inspiration:https://aircraft.airbus.com/en/airspace-cabin-vision-2035)

Scopes

● Investigate state of the art designs, innovation projects, patents and solutions from other industries and especially nature (biomimetic research)
● Find separable bonding principles between structure and surface
● Find various material options for surfaces and compare with different criteria like ecological impact, circularity, comfort and wellbeing, durability, weight, cost
● Fulfill hard airworthiness requirements (defined by Airbus) as much as possible
● Prototype manufacturing is a wish (e.g. material samples & additive manufactured cabin wall prototypes)

Target group (students)

● Interest in Material Science and Eco Design
● Focus on ecological impact and circularity
● Sense for user experience and usability
