Appointment to Board of Trustees of the Europaeum

Prof. Maximilian Kiener becomes part of the Europe-wide university network

Together for Europe: In January 2025, Professor Maximilian Kiener, head of the Institute for Ethics in Technology at the Hamburg University of Technology, was accepted into the Board of Trustees of the Europaeum. This prestigious network of leading European universities – including the Free University of Berlin, the University of Bologna and the University of Oxford – is committed to promoting interdisciplinary, intercultural and international cooperation to address some of Europe's most pressing challenges.

On his appointment, Maximilian Kiener said: “My connection with the Europaeum began as part of the first cohort of the Europaeum Scholars Programme (ESP). This two-year policy and leadership program, which can be undertaken alongside a PhD, has been one of the most formative experiences of my career. Through seminars with renowned scholars and practitioners, hands-on training, and team-oriented problem-solving on key European challenges, the ESP has given me the tools and inspiration to boldly think of new ways to achieve sustainable change. It is both an honor and a responsibility for me to now help shape the strategic development of the Europaeum in this new role.”

Prof. Kiener sits on the Board of Trustees with, among others, the former President of the European Commission, Professor José Manuel Barroso, the former Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Pascal Lamy, the Rector of the University of St. Andrews, Professor Dame Sally Mapstone, as well as the former Master of Balliol College, University of Oxford, and multiple advisor to British Prime Ministers, Dr. Andrew Graham.
