‘After graduation, students should be in a position to help shape social processes critically, reflectively and with a sense of responsibility and democratic public spirit.’ (§11,1)
This realisation of the Standing Conference of the Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK) seems more relevant today than ever: students also bear civil, political and cultural responsibility in society after graduation. The university must qualify them for this responsibility.
In 2009, the TUHH, under the leadership of the Commission for Non-Technical Electives (NTW Commission), anchored these findings structurally and set up the interdisciplinary non-technical supplementary modules.
From winter semester 2014/15, the range of courses is combined in the newly named modules ‘Non-technical offerings’ in the Bachelor's and Master's degree programmes introduced by 2024.
In 2016, the Academic Senate transfers responsibility for implementing the KMK resolutions to the newly founded Committee for Non-Technical Courses (NTA Committee).
Since 2012, we have been supporting the academic committees of the TUHH - newly named the NTA Coordination Centre in 2024 - in ensuring the social relevance of teaching. We
acquire teaching programmes,
assess whether it is sufficient and of suitable quality,
support TUHH external lecturers in particular,
provide students with fair, digital registration procedures,
harmonise structures and processes,
implement university collaborations such as the one with the Centre for Gender & Diversity and
would like to know if something is not running smoothly.
