This milestone comes three years after the successful introduction of the bachelor's programme and rounds off the comprehensive range of computer science courses at the Hamburg University of Technology. The international Master's programme in Data Science is not only aimed at our internal graduates, but also at an international student body. Applications were received from 27 countries around the world, from the USA to India. In October 2023, 86 ambitious students from all over the world finally started the programme.
As part of the expansion of Computer Science, the School of Study has significantly strengthened the area of Data Science. This is reflected in a wide range of new specialisations. These include Big Data, Human-Centred Machine Learning, Ethics in IT and Data Science Foundations. Building on these specialisations, new course content is also being offered, including Big Data, Statistical Models, Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Internet Computing.
An essential and fascinating aspect of the Master's programme is its interdisciplinary application. The practical application of data science spans various disciplines and is reflected in modules from all the Schools of the university. Examples include Digital Health, Causal Data Science for Business Analytics, and Robotics and Navigation in Medicine. These examples demonstrate the breadth and interdisciplinarity of the Master's in Data Science.
The launch of this course marks an important step in the development of our computing provision and the focus of the University. We look forward to seeing how this new generation of data scientists will drive the world of technology and innovation forward.
