The tenth Technomathematics Orientation Day took place on January 31. From early in the morning until late at night, 25 professors explained to first and third semester Technomathematics students how they can use their options in the second part of their Bachelor's degree to specialize in computer science, engineering and mathematics. This orientation day takes place every year and also serves as a kind of contact exchange where students meet professors who present their teaching and research areas in short lectures and point out mathematical challenges in their respective domains.
Technomathematics is a joint degree program of the TU Hamburg and the University of Hamburg. In the first semesters, students follow a very tightly prescribed compulsory program at TUHH and UHH to learn the basics of mathematics, programming, mechanics and electrical engineering. After that, they can put together their study plan from a wide range of over 75 elective modules from the various schools of the TUHH and the Department of Mathematics at the UHH and thus set their own study focus. The orientation day helps you to gain a good overview, because you can ask about the specific requirements and the links between the modules in direct discussions.
In addition to the professors' explanations, there is also a presentation from industry every year. This year, Franziska Sommer was our guest (see picture). Ms. Sommer actually studied Technomathematics in Hamburg and has been working for EyeC GmbH since 2021, where she develops software for print image inspection systems. This presentation was particularly informative for the students, as they were able to find out from someone who has followed the same career path as them exactly which skills acquired during their studies will pay off later in their careers and how.
The orientation day ended at 7 p.m. with an in-depth discussion between the students and graduates and advanced students.
