The research at the Institute of Solids Process Engineering and Particle Technology covers the main unit operations and numerous fields of applications of solids process engineering considering individual particles, bulk solids and multiphase particle laden flows. The main focus is on fluidized bed technology for design and formulation of particles (granulation, agglomeration, coating, drying). Experimental investigations in lab and pilot-plant scale are supported by novel developed measurement methods and compared with multi-scale simulation approaches, which includes particle based methods (DEM, population balances), continuous models (CFD, FEM), couplings (CFD-DEM) as well as flowsheet simulations of complex interconnected solids processes.

At the Institute of Technical Microbiology, we isolate and develop microorganisms to replace petroleum-based processes with new sustainable biological processes. For this purpose, we use a variety of bioinformatic, molecular biological and biochemical tools. In addition, we are engaged in the development of new reactor concepts to best exploit the capabilities of microorganisms.

Since the institute was founded in 1982, high pressure engineering has a long academic tradition in our institute. Our research topics include experimental and theoretical works concerning high-pressure engineering, supercritical fluids, accompanied by the thermodynamics of biological relevant systems and downstream processes. We investigate the production proceses of nano- and mesoporous materials (aerogels) in lab and pilot scale, including sol-gel process, coating and impregnation with active ingredients, providing the aerogels with exceptional properties for a variety of applications. Another area of research is the study of a selective fractionation of lignocellulosic biomass by liquid hot water hydrolysis (LHW), enzymatic biomass degradation and supercritical CO2 extraction. We also develop molecular methods for the design and optimization of separation processes based on micellar systems, especially for life science.

WG Efficient energy Systems and Production Processes

Head of Institute: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Kaltschmitt

Phone: +49 40 42878-3008

Institute email: iue(at)tuhh.de

The Institute of Environmental Technology and Energy Systems (IUE) at Hamburg University of Technology deals with the development, the analysis and the assessment of complex energy provision systems and the respective coupled production systems. This is realized within the context of the existing technological possibilities, the given economic constraints, and the demanded environmental necessities for the current and the future situation – and always under the overarching goal of an improved economic and environmental performance of such systems. This includes among others questions related to the particulate matter reduction from biomass-fired devices, assessment of options to use organic residues and wastes e.g. for the provision of fructane, the development and design of national and international hydrogen provision systems, the production of electricity-based liquid fuels, the life cycle assessment of innovative (energy-)technologies, and questions related to the system integration of fluctuating electrical energy into the decentralized heat market.
