Together for Europe: In January 2025, Professor Maximilian Kiener, Head of the Institute for Ethics in Technology at Hamburg University of Technology, was appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Europaeum. This prestigious network of leading European universities - including Freie Universität Berlin, Bologna University and the University of Oxford - is committed to promoting interdisciplinary, intercultural and international cooperation to tackle some of Europe's most pressing challenges.
Commenting on his appointment, Maximilian Kiener said: “My association with the Europaeum began as part of the first cohort of the Europaeum Scholars Program (ESP). This two-year policy and leadership program, run in parallel to the PhD, is one of the most formative experiences of my career. Through seminars with renowned academics and practitioners, hands-on training and team-oriented problem-solving on key European challenges, the ESP has given me the necessary tools and inspiration to boldly think new ways for sustainable change. It is both an honor and a responsibility for me to now help shape the strategic development of the Europaeum in this new role.”
Joining Prof. Kiener on the Board of Trustees are the former President of the European Commission Professor José Manuel Barroso, the former Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO) Pascal Lamy, the Rector of the University of St. Andrews, Professor Dame Sally Mapstone, as well as the former Master of Balliol College, University of Oxford, and multiple advisor to British Prime Ministers, Dr. Andrew Graham.
