Public Sector Augmented Reality Navigation Solutions
Description of the company
The Landesbetrieb Straßen, Brücken und Gewässer (LSBG) is the indispensable service provider for the public space and the entire life cycle of the infrastructure assets of the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. For this purpose, the LSBG has comprehensive solution competence, it is at the same time advisor, mediator, demand and realisation carrier. This includes modern ways of working, working in life-cycle management, networking and cooperation, as well as proactively dealing with change.
Since its founding in 2019, the DigiLab of the LSBG has been both a think tank and a technology hub. This is where effective and sustainable products as well as digital innovations are created that are used throughout the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg. Our interdisciplinary and international teams develop products with hybrid project management approaches: agile product development paired with classical control.
Situation
The navigation of citizens through the public sector is sometimes challenging. For instance, finding the way to the entry door as well as navigating through complex and unknown buildings of an authority visit is often frustrating.
Opportunities arise from current public sector developments regarding digital twins and the use of Building Information Modeling (BIM) for planning, building and asset management.
Problem
Open source solutions for mixed and augmented reality navigation are recently growing but real-life experience of deploying such is certainly unknown in the public sector. We already have an open source solution for the use case of an authority visit. The solution is based on BLE beacons but the implementation, precisely the floorplan generation, installation & maintenance of the beacons and especially navigation, is relatively expensive. Moreover, the BLE beacon indoor positioning yields to be inaccurate if the distance to the next beacon is too large.
Aims of the project
Research study on freely available, open source, mixed and augmented reality outdoor & indoor positioning, floorplan generation (mapping) and navigation solutions. The study can be extended to highlight details for digital twin and BIM applications. Accompanying developments or deployments of the open source software to our HoloLens or Android/iOS devices in agile sprints. UI/UX design and user journey development for defined use cases.
Scopes
The scope is to find solutions regarding open source augmented reality navigation for the public sector.
