Airbus

Automated Control of a Fan Used for Aeroacoustic Measurements

Description of the company

Airbus is the largest aeronautics and space company in Europe, providing products, services and solutions for the commercial aircraft, helicopter, defense and space sectors. Drawing on over half a century of aerospace engineering expertise, Airbus products are defined by innovation. We are developing the next generation of aircraft to be lighter, safer and more fuel-efficient, and to fly using alternative fuel sources.
From the commercial aircraft and helicopters that connect and unite people around the world to the military aircraft and satellites that protect citizens and countries, Airbus products enable modern and connected life.

Initial Situation

The components of the aircraft environmental control system are generating aerodynamic noise which can be heard inside the cabin and cockpit. The most critical components are characterized by noise measurements in the Airbus Acoustic Laboratory. In a standardized test set-up, the air flow is generated by a fan with adjustable RPM (rotation per minute). The sound power is measured for several flow rates.

Problem

Today the different flow rates needed for a measurement are obtained by manually adjusting the RPM of the fan by an engineer. Due to the high amount of measurement points it is a very time consuming task.

Aims of the project

  • Understand the physical process and the measured values in the control process. Build a test setup, incl. variable speed fan and mass flow regulator.
  • Develop, test and document a control process, using the existing software which automatically adjusts the needed RPMs of the fan.
  • The final step is an implementation presentation in the Airbus acoustic lab.

Scopes

The control needs to be integrated in WinControl software from Ahlborn Mess- und Regelungstechnik in connection with the Almemo RTA3 output interface. The software shall allow the engineer to define the minimum & maximum flow rate and the number of steps required and then the complete measurement sequence shall run autonomously.
The mentioned hardware and software will be provided by Airbus to the students for the duration of the project.
