Calming Cocoon / Moveable Baby Bassinet

Description of the company
Airbus is an international pioneer in the aerospace industry. We are a leader in designing, manufacturing and delivering aerospace products, services and solutions to customers on a global scale. Our pioneering spirit pushes us to explore, innovate and reach new heights in the aerospace sector.
We pioneer sustainable aerospace for a safe and united world.

Situation

  • During flight (except take off/landing), babies can be laid in so-called baby bassinets, which are mounted to cabin walls

Problem

  • Baby bassinets have fixed positions in the cabin → fixed seats for parents
  • Number of parents with babies limited
  • Cabin walls need to be equipped with special interfaces with inefficient load paths
  • Weight leads to additional loads for cabin walls and prevents new concepts

Aims of the project

  • Develop & design a moveable, lightweight baby bassinet that can be positioned variably throughout the cabin (e.g. inbetween seat rows)
  • Environmental pillar:
    • weight optimization of the bassinet & different positions leeds to weight optimization of related components (flight emissions reduction)
    • Consider circular economy aspects (e.g. recyclable materials, avoiding material mix)
  • Social pillar: optimize safety, user experience & passenger wellbeing especially for babies & mothers

Scopes

  • Discuss user needs & wishes (ideally validate through interviews, online surveys, …)
  • Investigate state of the art designs, innovation projects, patents and solutions from other industries
  • Fulfill hard airworthiness requirements (defined by Airbus) as much as possible, at the same time adapting the soft requirements (e.g. comfort requirements, nice-to-have requirements) continuously
  • define & evaluate different concepts, compare with state-of-the-art baby bassinets
  • design a final concept (3D model), calculate weight & stiffness

Target group (students)

  • Interest in mechanical design and structural optimization
  • Focus on user experience
  • Basic knowledge in user research and structural analysis
