Development of a Routing Tool for High and Heavy Cargoes
Description of the company
Siemens Gamesa is part of Siemens Energy, a global leader in energy technology with a rich legacy of innovation spanning over 150 years. Together, we are committed to making sustainable, reliable, and affordable energy a reality by pushing the boundaries of what is possible. As a leading player in the wind industry and manufacturer of wind turbines, we are passionate about driving the energy transition and providing innovative solutions that meet the growing energy demand of the global community. At Siemens Gamesa, we are constantly seeking talented individuals to join our team and support our focus on energy transition.
Situation
High and heavy components need to be transported through Germany to install wind turbines.
These components weigh up to 95t and reach a height of up to 4,50m.
Problem
Normal routing systems (e.g. google maps) do not feature any routing that considers potential obstacles and more sophisticated routing systems (e.g. CopilotTruck) only consider those restrictions that are visible on road, e.g. with signage. Unfortunately, these restrictions refer to a standard truck (max 4,00m height) and can therefore not be used for oversize trucking.
Aims of the project
SGRE has already started to measure bridge heights throughout Germany. The acquired data, together with further publicly available data, can now be used to develop a routing tool that considers different potential obstacles and finds a suitable route from a defined point of entry to any site in Germany. A similar routing solution will soon become available on the market, however SGRE at this moment cannot judge the usability of the system and has therefore decided to continue inhouse development. In addition, SGRE is highly interested to find out, which parts of Germany can be reached with given component dimensions from different port of import. Once the project has proven feasible for Germany an extension to other EU countries could be considered.
Obstacles to be considered for routing.
