Prof. Werner, who began his academic journey with a degree in electrical engineering from Ruhr University Bochum in 1989, quickly gained international recognition for his outstanding achievements in the field of control engineering. His academic career took him through prestigious institutions such as Strathclyde University in Glasgow, the Tokyo Institute of Technology and the University of Manchester before he became Professor of Control Systems at the TUHH in 2002.

During his time at the TUHH, Prof. Werner not only had a decisive influence on the research landscape, but also on teaching. His 295 publications and 19 supervised doctoral theses testify to his tireless commitment and dedication to academic research. His research interests spanned a wide range of topics, including linear systems theory, robust and gain-scheduled control systems, networked control systems, and the modeling of uncertain, nonlinear and time-varying systems.

In addition, Prof. Werner played a decisive role in the development of the degree courses in electrical engineering, mechatronics, mechanical engineering, process engineering and medical engineering. His commitment and passion for teaching were recognized in 2014 with the Hamburg Teaching Award.

In addition to his academic activities, Prof. Werner was also active in various offices at the TUHH. He served as a representative on the Academic Senate, a member of the Council of Elders and Chairman of the Committee for the Conferral of Academic Designations. Since 2016, he has served as an ombudsperson for good academic practice.

The School of EIM and the entire TUHH would like to thank Prof. Werner for his tireless contributions and wish him all the best for his well-deserved retirement.
