Server virtualisation in the Computing Center with VMware vSphere
We have been using VMware for server virtualization in the Computing Center (CC) since 2007. The system is currently comprised of six Primergy RX300 S6 servers made by Fujitsu. The individual servers are equipped with 192 GB RAM. Each server is connected to the central SAN system via FCoE (10 GB).
Thanks to VMware VMotion, a virtual server can be moved from one cluster node to another while it is running. This helps minimise disruptions while the virtual servers are in use.
We currently provide virtual servers for three different operating systems: Windows Server 2008 R2, Redhat Enterprise Linux 6.x and SUSE Linux Enterprise 11. A single virtual server offers up to 2 CPUs, 4 GB of RAM and 60 GB of hard drive space.
We are happy to provide up to two virtual servers for use by institutions at the TUHH. Please contact us if you are interested in using one of the CC's virtual servers on the VMware vSphere system. Please note, that we can offer larger numbers of virtual servers and virtual servers with significantly higher CPU/RAM/GB only after a consultation and within the scope of resource availability.
