Structural analysis of a bolted connection for rail construction
Description of the company
DB InfraGO AG is shaping the future of German railway infrastructure. Since 1 January 2024, we have been combining the strengths of DB Netz AG and DB Station&Service AG in an infrastructure company geared towards the common good. With over 63,800 employees*, we are creating the basis for the mobility of today and tomorrow. Our mission: to jointly create an efficient rail network and attractive railway stations from a single source that inspire across the board. In doing so, we are consistently focusing on achieving our political goals:
• Doubling transport performance in passenger rail transport,
• Increase our market share in rail freight transport from 19% to 25%,
• Implementing the Deutschlandtakt, the concept for an optimally synchronized timetable throughout the country.
The resilience of the railway infrastructure, increasing the market share of rail in the transport market and other public welfare objectives are now firmly anchored in the Articles of Association of DB InfraGO AG as corporate objectives and thus guide the company's actions.
Situation
This summer, DB Structural analysis of a bolted connection for rail construction in the tunnel structure in connection with the S6 urban railway line - fastening the rail to concrete girders
DB InfraGO has been commissioned to plan the construction of a new S-Bahn line – the S6 (West). In future, it will connect Altona with Bahrenfeld, Lurup and Osdorfer Born. Around 40,000 residents will gain access to the rapid transit network for the first time. The planning should be finalized by 2030. Based on the results of a completed feasibility study and an extensive participation process, the DB planning team is now starting to study and evaluate the best possible options for constructing the S6 (West) along the preferred route. Most of the S6 (West) will run underground.
Problem
The S6 (West) will run as an underground line and must be planned as a tunnel. The technical and infrastructural equipment must be designed to meet specific needs. Some standard solutions such as screw connections in railway construction cannot be used in the context of the tunnel construction. The aim of the project is to develop a conductor rail base for the FF (slab track).
Aims of the project
The project aim is to deliver a structural analysis of a bolted connection for rail construction that works in the tunnel structure - fastening the rail to concrete girders.
Scopes
Static proof of the base fastening using a screw connection on the FF.
Target group (students)
The project is designed to involve keen engineers and creative thinkers with a good technical understanding and an interest in railway construction. German language skills are a prerequisite.
