Determining the lime content according to DIN 18129

Status: 10.12.2024

The lime content is the mass fraction of total carbonates in relation to the mass of the dry soil. It is determined by a gasometric carbon dioxide determination. The lime content is required for the assessment and classification of soils for construction purposes.

We can determine the lime content either with the help of a gasometer or using the Scheibler method. The dry, powder-finely ground sample is moistened with hydrochloric acid. The amount of gas produced is measured with the gasometer and the mass of calcium carbonate is determined taking air pressure and temperature into account.
