Determining the ignition loss according to DIN 18128

Status: 10.12.2024

The proportion of organic substances is determined by annealing a soil sample in an oven. The loss on ignition of a soil is the loss of mass, relative to the dry mass, that the soil experiences when annealed. It is required for the assessment and classification of soils for construction purposes.

The dry, powder-finely ground sample is annealed in an annealing oven at 550 °C until the mass is constant. After annealing, the sample is cooled in a desiccator and then weighed.
