Network Security (O12)
Purpose
This module gives the student an introduction to network monitoring and security.
Prerequisites
To follow the introductory part no previous knowledge in the field is needed. To follow the module at basic or advanced levels, basic knowledge in computer networks, including TCP/IP and the OSI model is required.
Learning objectives
Students who complete the module at the introductory level will have an overview of the field of network security.
Students who complete the module at the basic level will additionally obtain:
- Knowledge of common threats including bots, spyware, adware, DoS/DDoS attacks, click-fraud, spam, and information theft.
- Knowledge of Botnets, including the botnet life cycle, botnet architectures and tracking, detection and mitigation of botnets.
- Knowledge of the motivations and business models behind cyber crime.
- Knowledge of how to apply the taught concepts for solving real life problems.
Students who complete the module at the advanced level will additionally obtain:
- Skills in monitoring and tracing traffic e.g. in wireshark, and being able to understand these data and how they can be applied in the detection of malicious network activities.
Pre-module material provided
For students without prior knowledge about computer networks, material will be available that gives sufficient introduction to TCP/IP and the OSI model to enable them to follow the module at basic and advanced levels.
Additional material provided
Additional material will be provided in terms of examples of the analysis of real botnet behaviour.
