Future Internet Opportunities - 2017
Figure 1. Future Internet Opportunities: Time Schedule 2017.
Purpose
This course presents the Future Internet to students in a holistic way. The trends and future challenges are covered from a variety of perspectives with the aim of providing a comprehensive understanding of the field. Students participating in the Future Internet course will have a unique opportunity of combining technological, business, and social aspects of the Future Internet to strengthen the applicability of the knowledge acquired in real situations.
Undoubtedly, the Future Internet is closely related to communication networks and their development. The students will participate in modules covering network technologies, network planning, nanonetworking, online services, and security among the technical material forming the curriculum.
On the other hand, the field is also covered from a business perspective, in order to complement the technical material of the course. To have a clear overview of the business potential in the Future Internet it is essential to succeed in developing new ideas. Therefore, the Future Internet enterprise architecture and entrepreneurship will be covered in depth in course modules.
Prerequisites
A bachelor degree in engineering or business (or equivalent competences).
Learning objectives
Students who complete the module will obtain:
- Knowledge of the Future Internet from technological, social, and business perspectives.
- Knowledge of the wide range of disciplines involved in the Future Internet, including trends and developments.
- Skills in selected areas of the Future Internet
- Skills in exploring the opportunities in the Future Internet, by relating technical, social and business aspects, and to demonstrate this skill in one or more real-world scenarios.
- Competences in working together in teams across scientific areas, countries and cultures, and to bring into play his/her own knowledge in such a context.
Content
Each student first obtains knowledge in selected areas of the Future Internet by following the 10 modules described on the following pages.
Each module is given in three levels: Introductory, basic, and advanced.
Students must follow all modules at an introductory level. In addition each student will select 4 modules to follow at the basic level and 2 modules at both basic + advanced levels, which will allow the students to develop skills in selected areas.
Afterwards a project based on a real-life case is done in groups of 4 students, where each group consists of students having knowledge in both business-oriented and technically-oriented topics. The project analyses a specific problem, and selects appropriate tools/methods to design and verify one or more possible solutions.
Figure 2. Future Internet Opportunities: The Modules.
Fig 2. Illustrates the distribution of the modules in terms of:
- Profile: Technical modules fit into topics commonly taught in classic engineering degrees (i.e. telecommunications, computer science) and usability modules fit into topics commonly taught business and economics education.
- Type of content: All modules have theoretical and practical content. However, some are more focused on presenting theoretical material and others on the practical application of the theory.
This representation allows the students to personalize their study curriculum for the course depending on what skills/profile they want to develop.
Evaluation
Oral examination based on the project.
Grading
Pass/Fail.
Extent
5 ECTS
