M2M communication challenges and smart city solutions (O10)
Purpose
In this module students will get familiar with the present and future challenges in the area of the M2M communication implementation with emphasis on challenges in the Smart Grid systems. Students will be able to identify communication problems and specific solutions dedicated for smart solutions. They will be presented similarities and differences between typical ICT and smarts solutions e.g. smart lighting, smart metering, distributed generation, SCADA, remote controlling and specific telecom services in LV (Low Voltage), MV (Medium Voltage) and HV (High Voltage) networks. Great emphasis will be placed on economic problems and environmental protection, which are offered thanks to smart grid.
Prerequisites
To follow the introductory part, no previous knowledge in the field is needed. To follow the module at basic or advanced levels, the students are expected to have basic knowledge of the communication media and networking techniques.
Learning objectives
Students who complete the introductory level will have a basic understanding of the elements involved in M2M communications used to build smart city solutions for the purposes of the location of objects and people, remote device controlling, telemetry and telemedicine.
Students who complete the basic level will obtain knowledge in:
- Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
- Smart Grid controlling with the usage of power line communications and short range RF technologies.
- Demand – Response Control Infrastructure.
- Last mile network problems in smart cities.
- Methods of implementation and the role of the Internet in smart lightning, smart traffic controlling, smart media distribution and data acquisition.
- Knowledge of how to apply the taught concepts for solving real life problems.
At the advanced level, students will obtain knowledge in selected topics such as:
- Differences in European and North American electric power distribution grids.
- Smart grid controlling with the usage of power line communications and short range RF technologies.
- Estimation of the transmission parameters and the last mile network efficiency on the basis of the transmission media condition.
- Broadband power line communications technologies. The areas of implementation and the limits of the technology.
- Advanced smart city infrastructure.
- Advanced GIS tools
- Skills in general ICT measurement techniques adaptation to smart grid communication systems quality assessment.
- Skills in real-life architectures, equipment and technologies throughout the presentation of real life case studies.

Relevant literature will be provided to the students.
Additional material provided
Besides the main course material in the form of presentation slides, students are provided additional materials such as real life study cases and projects and a GIS tool to develop the assignments.
