Bio Sketch

Timm Faulwasser has studied Engineering Cybernetics with minor in philosophy at the University of Stuttgart. From 2008 until 2012 he was a member of the International Max Planck Research School for Analysis, Design and Optimization in Chemical and Biochemical Process Engineering Magdeburg. In 2012 he obtained his PhD from the Department of Electrical Engineering and Information Engineering, Otto-von-Guericke University Magdeburg, Germany. From 2013 to 2016 he was with the Laboratoire d’Automatique, École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland, while 2015-2019 he was leading the Optimization and Control Group at the Institute for Automation and Applied Informatics at Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT), where he successfully completed his habilitation in the Department of Informatics in 2020. From November 2019 to March 2024 he held the professorship for Energy Efficiency at TU Dortmund University, Germany. Since April 2024 he is Full Professor at TU Hamburg and leads the Institute of Control Systems.

Previously, Timm was a member of the IEEE-CSS Conference Editorial Board and associate editor of the European Journal of Control. Currently, he serves as associate editor for the IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control, the IEEE Control System Letters, and Mathematics of Control Systems and Signals. Timm received the 2021-2023 Automatica Paper Prize and he is the recipient of the 2025 European Control Award.

His main research interests are optimization-based and data-driven control of nonlinear, stochastic, and network systems with applications in energy, process systems engineering, climate economics and beyond.
