In the ACIE laboratory section, 3 SMA Sunny Island 4.4M single-phase grid-forming battery inverters can be integrated to form a three-phase system with up to 16.5 kW peak power. The battery inverters are powered from a 40 kWh, 48 V lithium iron phosphate battery. The inverters can either be used as a load / test component or power the AC panel as a source, forming a battery-powered island grid. If required, this island grid can be connected to the public grid. This allows numerous use cases to be mapped and a wide range of tests to be carried out.
The inverters are integrated into the laboratory automation system via CAN and Modbus. This enables various operating modes of grid-connected or stand-alone battery storage systems to be implemented. It also allows them to be integrated as variable AC loads in various studies. The main specifications are:
- 5.5 kW peak power per phase in a 400V system
- 3.0 kW continuous power per phase in a 400V system
- Automatic grid switching
