Abstract: Spectrum sharing between coexisting competing wireless systems like IEEE 802.11 and IEEE 802.16 in unlicensed bands is an upcoming challenge. Interference between the systems? transmissions due to a lack of synchronization between them, direct or indirect, is identified as one of the main problems. An approach of resource sharing between the systems by the use of a regular pattern in time domain has been proposed by the authors in recent publications and has shown an improvement concerning this issue. In this paper, the concept is extended to be adaptive in changing conditions, by using Traffic Demand Estimation (TDE) methods. TDE methods are based on channel sensing and detection. The estimation of traffic demand by means of different measured distributions is shown in the paper. Examples of such distributions are provided considering different scenarios in a simulation environment.
