The Information Bottleneck Method in the Corona Pandemic

In these turbulent times, the Covid-19 pandemic also became a study item at the Institute of Communications. In his project work, Semir Cömertpay, supported by his supervisor Maximilian Stark, analyzed the available data of the pandemic employing applied information theory. Using the generic machine learning tool termed “Information Bottleneck Method” possible protection concepts as well as findings on the occurrence of infections and on possible vaccination plans were analyzed.

Dissertation on 'Cooperative Multipath Assisted Positioning'

On December 15, 2020, Markus Ulmschneider successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis Cooperative Multipath Assisted Positioning. The Ph.D. examination committee was formed by Prof. Dr. Matthias Kuhl (Institute for Integrated Circuits) and the two reviewers Prof. Dr.-Ing. Gerhard Bauch and Prof. Dr. Klaus Witrisal (Graz University of Technology).

Prof. Hermann Rohling Receives Honorary Degree

On November 12, 2020, Prof. Hermann Rohling received the honorary degree of Doctor Honoris Causa from the Politehnica University of Timisoara, Romania. Prof. Rohling was awarded the degree for valuable contributions to the higher education development, scientific research, and good cooperation with Politehnica University of Timisoara.

Gerhard Bauch elected to the Board of Directors of the ITG

Gerhard Bauch, head of the Institute of Communications, was elected to the Board of Directors of the Information Technology Society (ITG) in the Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies (VDE) for the term 2021-2023.

On February 12, 2020, Martin Kurras successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis Massive MIMO in Cellular Networks. The Ph.D. examination committee was formed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Hoc Khiem Trieu (Institute of Microsystems Technology) and the two reviewers Prof. Dr.-Ing. Gerhard Bauch and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Tobias Weber (University of Rostock).

WSA 2020: 24th International ITG Workshop on Smart Antennas in Hamburg

The 24th International ITG Workshop on Smart Antennas (WSA 2020) will take place from 18-20 February 2020 at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), and is an annual event which covers a broad scope of topics, such as beamforming, massive MIMO, mmWave transmission, compressive sensing, ultra-low latency communications, MIMO radar, sensor networks, device-to-device communications, and localization. The conference is organized by the Information Technology Society (ITG) of the Association for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies (VDE). Prof. Hermann Rohling becomes ITG Fellow

On November 25, 2019, Prof. Hermann Rohling was appointed ITG Fellow by the Information Technology Society (ITG) of the Association for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies (VDE).

Gerhard Bauch elected to the Review Board of the German Research Foundation (DFG)

Gerhard Bauch was elected to the review board (Fachkollegium) of the German Research Foundation (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft, DFG) for the period 2020-2023. He is one of four review board members for the subject area “communications engineering, high frequency technology, communications networks, electromagnetic theory.”

Dissertation on 'Position Estimation in Networks with Sparse Infrastructure'

On November 22, 2019, Rico Mendrzik successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis Position Estimation in Networks with Sparse Infrastructure. The Ph.D. examination committee was formed by Prof. Volker Turau (Institute of Telematics) and the two reviewers Prof. Gerhard Bauch and Prof. Henk Wymeersch (Chalmers University of Technology, Göteborg).

Teaching Awards for Students of Institute of Communications

On 6th of June 2019, three students working as tutors in the Institute of Communications received teaching awards from the “Zentrum für Lehre und Lernen” (ZLL) at TUHH. During a special ceremony in the TUHH main building, Felix Ganz, Jan-Joshua Schmitt, and Tal Peer were handed the prize to acknowledge their outstanding teaching skills in the group tutorials of “Signals and Systems” and the project based learning course on “Modern Wireless Systems”, respectively.

Swantje Plambeck receives Hamburger VDI Award

Swantje Plambeck received the second award of the Hamburger VDI award for her bachelor thesis “Analysis of Convolutional Codes for Underwater Communications” which she had done at the Institute of Communications under the supervision of Melanie Falk. The award ceremony with participation of Sven Warnck and Axel Dreckschmidt, board members of the VDI local chapter Hamburg, took place on May 22, 2019 in the Panorama Lounge at the St. Pauli fish market.

Team from TU Munich receives Heinrich Hecht Award

Tobias Prinz, Fabian Steiner, Thomas Wiegart and Peihong Yuan from Technische Universität München received the Heinrich Hecht award for winning the coding challenge “Wanted: Best Channel Codes for Short Underwater Messages” which was organized by the Institute of Communications in cooperation with the Technical Center for Ships and Naval Weapons, Maritime Technology and Research in Kiel.

SCC 2019 12th International ITG Conference on Systems, Communications and Coding in Rostock

The 12th International Conference on Systems, Communications and Coding (SCC) will take place on February 11-14, 2019 in Rostock. SCC is organized by the Information Technology Society (ITG) of the Association for Electrical, Electronic and Information Technologies (VDE) with technical co-sponsorship of IEEE. SCC aims at bridging the gap between theory, applications and various communities in the field of communications. Therefore, contributions from both academia and industry, theoretical work as well as applied research in various fields of communications are encouraged. Project-based Learning Course on Modern Wireless Systems

The 30th January 2019 marked the first successful completion of the project-based learning (PBL) course on modern wireless systems at the Institute of Communications. Students presented the findings of their analysis on WiFi systems, including simulation results generated with GNU Radio, in the form of poster presentations.

5th Joint Workshop with Seoul National University

After three years of intensive exchange and cooperation between members of the Seoul National University (SNU) and the Institute of Communications (INT) of TUHH, the two groups met for a last joint workshop in Seoul. After several visits in Hamburg and Seoul within these three years, a delegation of three Ph.D. students and Prof. Bauch travelled to Seoul. The workshop was held from 13th of November to 15th of November 2018. It is part of a German-Korean Partnership Program (GenKO), which is funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF).

Gerhard Bauch elected to the Board of Governors of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society

Gerhard Bauch, head of the Institute of Communications was elected to the board of governors of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society for the term 2019-2021.

Institute of Communications at „Tag des Wissens“

On 22nd September, 2018, the “Tag des Wissens” (“Knowledge Day”) was hosted by TUHH. Open to the general public, the event was centered on the topic of “Technology and Digital Worlds” and attracted around 4500 visitors. In this framework, the Institute of Communications presented a new project-based learning course on modern wireless systems. It makes use of the software tool GNU Radio, which enables students to implement and analyze various practical tasks of signal processing in digital data transmission.

Dissertation on 'Interference Management in Mobile Networks'

On September 10, 2018, Rodrigo Alberto Justavino Castillo successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis Interference Management in Mobile Networks. The Ph.D. examination committee was formed by Prof. Alexander Schlaefer (Institute of Medical Technology) and the two reviewers Prof. Gerhard Bauch and Prof. Armin Wittneben (ETH Zürich).

Maximilian Stark receives Karl H. Ditze Award

Maximilian Stark received the Karl H. Ditze award for his master thesis Information Optimum Design of Discrete LDPC Decoders for Irregular Codes which he had done at the Institute of Communications (INT) under the supervision of Jan Lewandowsky. The award ceremony with participation of Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rolf Dalheimer, board member of the Karl H. Ditze Foundation, took place on July 11, 2018 at TUHH.

Mustafa Emara receives Best Student Paper Award at European Conference on Networks and Communications (EUCNC)

Mustafa Emara, Ph.D. student at the Institute of Communications, received a best student paper award for the paper MEC-assisted E2E Latency Evaluations for C-V2X Communicationsat the European Conference on Networks and Communications (EUCNC) which took place on June 18-21, 2018 in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

Visit of student group from University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC)

For the third time, a of students from University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) visited our institute, TUHH and Hamburg for two weeks at the end of May and beginning of June, 2018. They gained rich experiences in the studies and live of German university students as well as German culture.

On April 23, 2018, Guangxia Zhou successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis Rate-Splitting Methods for Interference Management in Cellular Wireless Systems. The Ph.D. examination committee was formed by Prof. Christian Becker (Institute of Electrical Power and Energy Technology) and the two reviewers Prof. Gerhard Bauch and Prof. Robert Schober (Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg).

Peter Oppermann receives Petersen Award

Peter Oppermann received a second award of the Werner Petersen Technology Awards for his master thesis Implementation of Information Optimum Decoders for Low-Density Parity-Check Codes on a Digital Signal Processor which he had done at the Institute of Communications (INT) under the supervision of Jan Lewandowsky in cooperation with the Fraunhofer Institute for Communication, Information Processing and Ergonomics (FKIE), Wachtberg.

4th Joint Workshop with Seoul National University

For the third time in 2017 members of the Seoul National University (SNU) and the Institute of Communications (INT) of the TUHH met for a joint workshop to intensify the exchange and the partnership between the research groups.

Sommercamp Elektrotechnik 2017

Was ist eigentlich eine elektromagnetische Welle? Wie genau erzeugt man Strom aus Windenergie? Auf welche Weise orientieren sich Fledermäuse mit Ultraschall? Wie kommen Sprache, Musik und Videos per Funk in mein Handy? Das ist nur ein kleiner Teil der Fragen, die im diesjährigen Sommercamp Elektrotechnik an der Technischen Universität Hamburg (TUHH) behandelt werden. Beteiligt sind dabei von Seiten der TU die Institute für Theoretische Elektrotechnik (Prof. Schuster), Elektrische Energietechnik (Prof. Becker), Nachrichtentechnik (Prof. Bauch) und Mikrosystemtechnik (Dr. Hingst).

2nd Workshop on Wireless Communications with Seoul National University

The 2nd workshop on wireless communications between TUHH and Seoul National University took place on January 23-24, 2017 at TUHH hosted by the Institute of Communications (INT). The workshop was part of an exchange project funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) and the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) within the German-Korean Partnership Programme (GenKO).

Reent Schlegel receives SICK Award

Reent Schlegel received the SICK award (SICK-Förderpreis) for his bachelor thesis Cooperative Localization in Wireless Networks which he had done at the Institute of Communications (INT) under the supervision of Rico Mendrzik. The award ceremony with participation of the donator Renate Sick-Glaser as well as the SICK AG management board member Wolfgang Bay took place on January 20, 2017 at TUHH.

Double Anniversary Party at Institute of Communications

On January 10th, 2017, a double anniversary party was held for two members of the Institute of Communications: Prof. Hermann Rohling had turned 70 in December, while technician Dieter Gödecke had celebrated his 60th birthday in the same month.

Joint Workshop at Seoul National University

A delegation of three Ph.D. students from the Institute of Communications (INT) and Prof. Gerhard Bauch have visited the Seoul National University (SNU), ranked number one among the Korean universities, for a workshop. The workshop is intended to promote exchange between Korean and German researchers. The workshop was funded by the Deutscher Aka- demischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) and the Korean National Research Fund (NRF).

Claude Elwood Shannon, der Begründer der Infor- mationstheorie, hätte in diesem Jahr seinen 100. Geburtstag gefeiert. Weltweit finden aus diesem Anlass Veranstaltungen statt. Die TUHH möchte mit einem Vortrag von Dr. Axel Roch dazu beitragen, den Wissenschaftler Shannon einem breiteren Publikum bekanntzumachen.

A group of students from the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC) visited our institute and University for one week at the end of May, 2016. UESTC is located in Chengdu, Southwest China, and belongs to China’s leading  universities for higher education in electronic and information science and technology.

In context of a project week students from the Gymnasium Oberalster in Hamburg-Sasel visited our institute in September 2015 and gained insights into the perspectives of studying electrical engineering and its importance in everyday life.

On August 25, 2015, Serkan Uygungelen successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis Interference Coordination for Femtocell Networks. The Ph.D. examination committee was formed by Prof. Arne Jacob (Institute of Microwave Engineering, Optics, and Electromagnetic Compatibility) and the two reviewers Prof. Gerhard Bauch and Prof. Harald Haas (University of Edinburgh, UK).

Reception on the occasion of Prof. Bauch’s IEEE fellowship

In January 2015 Prof. Gerhard Bauch was awarded with the IEEE Fellowship for his contributions to iterative processing in multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems. On this occasion, a reception was held at the TUHH.

Student Excursion to Munich

The Institutes of Communications, Microwave Engineering and Communications Networks jointly organized a student excursion to Munich. From the 27th to the 29th of May, the students have visited Rohde & Schwarz, as well as Airbus Defense & Space.

Gerhard Bauch, head of the Institute of Communications, has been elevated to the grade of Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). IEEE honors Gerhard Bauch’s contributions to iterative processing in multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems.

The Institute of Communications organized a student excursion to Munich, which took place from 26th to 28th May, 2014. This trip provided the opportunity to visit the headquarters of the company Rohde & Schwarz.
