User Perception of AI-based Software

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has demonstrated its transformative potential across a wide range of applications. From improving medical diagnostics in healthcare to improving urban traffic flow for reduced emissions, AI offers significant societal benefits. In cybersecurity, AI-based algorithms can be used to detect and prevent cyberattacks. In the KISSHome research project, we explore the user-centric design of AI-based security software, leading to two potential areas for a Master's thesis.

Potential research topics could be:

1. Perception of Effectiveness

AI algorithms are often viewed as black boxes, which presents challenges for users in understanding their results and functionality. Effective user interface design can enhance the perceived effectiveness of an AI-based software.

Research question: What factors influence the perceived effectiveness of AI-based software?

2. Voluntary Data Sharing

To fully realize the potential of AI algorithms, large amounts of data must be provided. This often relies on users voluntarily sharing their personal data to improve algorithms for the collective benefit.

Research question: What factors influence users' willingness to share their data?

If you are interested in the thesis, please send me a short letter of motivation (why are you interested in this topic, 1/2 page). In a personal meeting we can discuss the specific modalities and focus of the thesis according to your personal preferences.
