Abstract: A method for process fault diagnosis using quantised measurement information is proposed. The basis of this method is provided by discrete-event representations that describe the qualitative behaviour of a continuous-variable system after a fault has occured. By solving observation problems for the measured qualitative input-output behaviour with respect to these models, it is possible to generate probabilities for each fault model. The method can be used to detect, isolate and identify faults.
