A paper “Avoiding Local Interference in IEEE 802.15.4 TSCH Networks using a Scheduling Function with Distributed Blacklists” has been accepted for the 24th VDE/ITG Fachtagung Mobilkommunikation, will be held in 15th to 16th May 2019, Osnabrück.

A paper “EPIC: Making Multinational Student Projects Happen” has been accepted for the 11th International Symposium on Project Approaches in Engineering Education (PAEE'2019) and the 16th Active Learning in Engineering Education Workshop (ALE'2019), will be held in 10th to 12th June 2019, Hammamet, Tunisia.

A paper “Triggered Transmission of Black Box Data via Satellite” has been accepted for the 7th International Workshop on Aircraft System Technologies (AST 2019), will be held in February at TUHH, 2019.

We had a successful Project Planning Seminar at UPC in Barcelona, 2019 February 11-15 37 students from all 8 EPIC Universities joined the seminar to start with their master/bachelor projects in the area of “Computer Networks”, "Autonomous Vehicles", "Cyber Security", "Smart city", “Descending Cities”, and Mobile Application for funding research. 5 TUHH master students and 2 supervisors from ComNets involved in 2 of these projects. We are very glad to announce that the last EPIC Project Planning Seminar will be held at TUHH, Feb 2020.

We are excited to announce the start of the research project IntAirNet - Inter Aircraft Network - in the beginning of 2019. For the next four years, our institute, together with 7 other project partners from industry and research, will work on the design of reliable air-to-air communication technologies. The project IntAirNet is funded by the Luftfahrtforschungsprogramm of the Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Energie.

A paper “Towards Prediction of Power Consumption of Virtual Machines for Varying Loads” has been accepted for The 28th International Telecommunication Networks and Application Conference (ITNAC 2018), will be held in November at the University of New South Wales Sydney, Australia, 2018.

We are glad to inform that we received the “Best scientific contribution award” for our paper on “Teaching Modelling and Analysis of Communication Networks using OMNeT++ Simulator” at the 5th OMNeT++ summit held in Italy, September 2018. The Simulation and Modelling of Communication Networks is a project based learning course offered at the computer science and electrical engineering master programs at TUHH. The following is the abstract of this paper. At the Hamburg University of Technology, Germany, the modelling of communication networks using the OMNeT++ simulator and the INET framework is taught for Master students. Teaching the concepts of simulation and modelling while letting the students obtain a hands-on experience during a 14-week (4h/week) period (single semester) is a challenging task. The diversity of the pre-knowledge of the participating students and the duration of the course are the main challenges that need to be addressed when organising such a course. This paper discusses the structure of this course and the best practices followed. The course adopts a methodology where lectures on concepts are mixed with INET based exercises that begin with simple topics and gradually moving into advanced topics.

Our paper “Coexistence of Wireless Avionics Intra-Communication Networks” has been accepted for the 6th Annual IEEE International Conference on Wireless for Space and Extreme Environments (WISEE 2018), will be held in December 11 to 13, 2018 in Huntsville, AL, USA.

Torsten Runge (TUHH), Alexander Jung (Lancaster University) and Michał Król (UCL) (supervised by Bob Lantz) won 3rd place award at the ACM SIGCOMM 2018 Hackaton for their joint work on the project "Unikernel Support for Mininet". The project extends the network emulator tool Mininet to run unikernels on Mininet hosts. A unikernel is a light-weight, specialized operating system which uses only the most important components of an operating system to run a specific application. This new technology is emerging as an alternative to containers (e.g. Docker) because unikernels have a small footprint, boot extremely quickly and provide improved security. The ACM SIGCOMM 2018 Hackathon took place on Saturday, August 25, 2018 from 9 am to 8 pm at Nokia Skypark in Budapest, Hungary. It offers a unique opportunity for collaboration on the development of new ideas and software related to research topics presented in the SIGCOMM conference. The event brings together people with a variety of skills to encourage the combination of different types of expertise and inspire creativity. The Hackathon aims to encourage students, researchers, and engineers to gain experience through collaboration in contributing to open source software, transfer their research experience and expertise in open source development, and foster reproducibility of research results. "Rare event analysis using the Limited Relative Error algorithm for OMNeT++ simulations" and “Teaching Modelling and Analysis of Communication Networks using OMNeT++ Simulator” for the OMNeT++ Community Summit: September 5th - 7th, 2018 in Pisa, Italy

We are happy to announce that the research project ReSA - Retrofitbare Sensorsystem-Architektur für prädiktive Instandhaltung - has been officially started on 1st of August 2018. During four years, we will work on reliable communication networks with a focus on predictive maintenance applications on board aircraft. The project ReSA is funded by LuFo, the Luftfahrtforschungsprogramm of the Bundesministerium für Wirtschaft und Energie, BMWi.
