While scientists have been collecting data on climate change for decades and are thus able to evaluate the changes that come with it, not much research has been done into the effects climate change has on biodiversity. Since 1990 the number of birds and insects in central europe has declined notably, which is shown by several smaller research efforts. A broad, national monitoring program however does not exist. The technical infrastructure is missing.

With the AMMOD project the necessary technology will be combined and adapted. A network of stations will be designed to automaticly monitor biodiversity, like the existing network of weather station monitors the climate. To that end a multitude of sensor systems will be attached to the stations which collect data autonomously in the field and send the collected data to a central server for evaluation.

The design of the base station is coordinated at the TUHH. The communication links between sensors and base station as well as the internet link od the base station are being developed here too. The focus is on finding energy efficient solutions as the base station has only limited and self-supplied power available.
