PhD candidates Moritz Hollenberg and Tom Liebing have work together under the supervision of Chief Engineer Dennis Kähler and Prof. Thorsten A. Kern at the Institute for Mechatronics in Mechanics at TUHH on a simulation framework for Electrical Impedance Tomography systems.

Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) is a promising technique for monitoring chemical processes and optimizing control. To meet the specific needs of these processes, EIT hardware and image reconstruction algorithms must be tailored accordingly, requiring extensive data. In this work, a hybrid approach combining SPICE and COMSOL was used to build a framework that generates simulated EIT data for real-world systems, enabling optimization of both hardware and algorithms. COMSOL fits equivalent circuit models, while SPICE simulates the output signal with noise from hardware components. This framework allows for data simulation, realistic image reconstruction, and effective optimization for custom systems.
