Exchange Summer BBQ 2023

University of Waterloo

For more than 30 years, the TU Hamburg has maintained its strong and fruitful partnership with the University of Waterloo. Every year, 6-12 undergraduate and graduate students from U Waterloo visit TU Hamburg. Incoming students usually stay in Hamburg for 3-4 months and work on joint research projects with different TUHH research groups.

Current open positions will be posted on the U Waterloo co-op website.

New Option available for UW-Students: Starting in Fall 2020, we are offering a combination of academic study and co-op research internships (more information)

University of California, Berkeley

The exchange program between UC Berkeley and TUHH was established in 1996. Since then, we offer research internships at MuM during the summer months. Target groups are both grad and undergraduate COE/ME students.

Open positions for the next summer will be presented during an information session at Berkeley in October. If you missed the session, feel free to contact us any time, we will provide you with all the information needed.

If you are a grad student and have ideas for collaboration outside the presented open positions, you're more than welcome to contact us. We look forward to new research impulses.

Application deadline: typically November 15th of the year

Next Infosession: October 2024 @Berkeley

About TU Hamburg

The Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) is one of the youngest Universities in Germany. While the first plans for a technical University in Hamburg can be traced back to the 1920s, TUHH was funded in 1978. Since then TUHH has been growing to a modern campus university in southern Hamburg. TUHH is a small (8,000 students) but high-class university with a clear profile in research. We take our small size as a chance to offer our students a personal way of teaching with modern, practice oriented learning methods. Many courses include project-based learning in small groups under direct supervision of our academic staff. Thanks to our interdisciplinary structure and outstanding staffing and facilities, TUHH is proud to offer a modern, research related, yet practically geared education. This includes the organization of various exhibitions, field trips and semester highlights such as the well-known TUHH-Sommerfest.

Why visit Hamburg?

Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany with 1.8 million inhabitants. Hamburg is one of the most dynamic regions in Europe with the best growth prospects. It is a vibrant metropolis with a high quality of life. Hamburg has more than 40 theatres, 60 museums, and 100 music venues and clubs. Economically and culturally, Hamburg is also the center of Northern Germany. We have many famous places to visit such as the popular Elbphilharmonie, the Speicherstadt, as well as many international musicals e.g. The Lion King. Besides, Hamburg is known for its exciting nightlife scene. Bar and clubs are almost clumped on the Reeperbahn and Sternschanze, where you can enjoy the night and have a direct metro link form TUHH campus.

Exploring Germany and Europe:
Hamburg is a good starting point for discovering Germany and Europe. Hamburg International Airport has direct connections to all major European cities and hubs. Hamburg is well connected within the German High-Speed-Train System and long-distance bus system (Flixbus). Travel times within Germany and to its neighboring countries are very convenient.

Testimonials

"I had a huge learning curve this summer and learned so much in the topics of Topology Optimization, under which umbrella lay Finite Element Method, coding in C++, object oriented programming, adjoint calculations, transformations, and more involving putting theory learned in school to practice. Apart from all of the technical skills I gained, I also found out more about my personal career goals due to all the amazing opportunities that the institute presented to me. Talking to other students and professors and learning more about how they had ended up at the university [...] really inspired me in some ways, and I’m thinking differently about my goals than before I started"

- Linda Krellner (UCB), Summer Research Intern 2023 @MuM, TUHH

"This internship was full of experiencing new things—both academically and culturally. [...] I would recommend this program to anyone open to experiencing new cultures, meeting new brilliant people and interested in pursuing a masters or PhD degree in engineering—especially in Europe. This program lets you gain insight into what work PhD students do and what TUHH and other technical universities offer."

- Preston Hong (UCB), Summer Research Intern 2023 @MuM, TUHH
