Design of bioreactors and peripheries (Exercise/Practical):

  • reactor types and geometry
  • materials and surface treatment
  • agitation system design
  • insertion of stirrer
  • sealings
  • fittings and valves
  • peripherals
  • materials
  • standardization
  • demonstration in laboratory and pilot plant

Sterile operation:

  • theory of sterilisation processes
  • different sterilisation methods
  • sterilisation of reactor and probes
  • industrial sterile test, automated sterilisation
  • introduction of biological material
  • autoclaves
  • continuous sterilisation of fluids
  • deep bed filters, tangential flow filters
  • demonstration and practice in pilot plant

Instrumentation and control:

  • temperature control and heat exchange 
  • dissolved oxygen control and mass transfer 
  • aeration and mixing 
  • used gassing units and gassing strategies
  • control of agitation and power input 
  • pH and reactor volume, foaming, membrane gassing

Bioreactor selection and scale-up:

  • selection criteria
  • scale-up and scale-down
  • reactors for mammalian cell culture

Integrated biosystem:

  • interactions and integration of microorganisms, bioreactor and downstream processing
  • Miniplant technologies 

Team work with presentation:

  • Operation mode of selected bioprocesses (e.g. fundamentals of batch, fed-batch and continuous cultivation)
