Short Biography
Günther Clauss was born in 1939 in Munich. He studied technical physics at the Technical Universities at Munich and Berlin and got his PhD with honours in 1968 at the Berlin Institute of Aerospace Engineering. After his habilitation in the field of ocean engineering in 1971, he became Professor of Ocean Engineering in 1972 at the Technical University of Berlin (TUB). After research visits at the MIT in Boston, at the University of California in Berkeley and at the Indian Institute of Technology in Madras he was appointed to the first Chair in Ocean Engineering in Germany at TUB in 1973. For many years he managed the Institute for Naval Architecture and Ocean Engineering. Günther Clauss was also Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Transportation Systems over the duration of three legislative periods and Senator of the Academic Council at the Technical University Berlin.
His broad research activities with focus on design and hydrodynamics of offshore installations and deep sea technology include research projects on the design and optimization of offshore platforms, on the installation of pipelines and the application of floating cranes, on the capsizing safety of ships, on oil pollution fighting systems, on deep sea shuttles and also on deep sea mining. In offshore platform decommissioning he served as a member of the Scientific Review Groups for the Ekofisk and Brent Fields.
Günther Clauss developed the method of "tailor made" extreme waves in deterministic irregular seaways for the analysis of wave/structure interaction. In cooperation with his colleagues and industrial partners he published more than 400 papers ("best paper award" OMAE 2006) and the books "Meerestechnische Konstruktionen" and "Offshore Structures" (also published in Korean).
About 40 dissertations – many of them honoured with the Georg-Weinblum or the Curt-Bartsch award – resulted from his research projects of the EU, BMBF, BMWi, DFG, and AIF as well as in cooperation with industrial partners. Günther Clauss worked as member and chairman of the ITTC and the ISSC. He is also a member of STG, RINA and SNAME. In 2005 Günther Clauss was honoured with the KERN award for maritime technologies, in 2006 with the SOBENA International Reward. In 2006/2007 he was nominated as Georg Weinblum memorial lecturer.
