Materials for SMART reactors: Thermodynamic and kinetic modelling of responsive materials

This research follows the subproject B01 of the collaborative research centre SFB 1615, "SMART Reactors for Future Process Engineering". General information about the collaborative research centre are listed here. This is the first four-year phase within an expected twelve-year duration of the collaborative research centre. Both Prof. Irina Smirnova (TUHH) and Prof. Walter Chapman (Rice University, Houston) supervise subproject B01.

The underlying goal is to describe the distinctive swelling behaviour of hydrogels under the consideration of various external stimuli. This is done by applying parameterized thermodynamic models, PC-SAFT and iSAFT. Firstly, different multicomponent systems in thermodynamic equilibrium with the hydrogel are modelled and compared with experimental data. The models are subsequently extended to cover further substance specific properties. Finally, starting from the thermodynamic equilibria, kinetic models are developed based on the gradients of the chemical potential. This gives an insight into the time dimension of the swelling behaviour.
