Abstract: This paper discusses a newly developed approach to ship design. It employs Monte Carlo simulations in order to reproduce and prognosticate lifetime operation conditions of a projected (or existing) vessel. On the basis of statistical environmental data in combination with direct calculations of the vessel’s propulsion it is possible to benchmark different designs regarding e.g. fuel efficiency or rudder cavitation.
