Abstract: To control emissions from new built ships, the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) was adopted in 2012. For ships laid down before this regulation came into force, the IMO has now specified the EEXI to reduce emissions from the fleet in service. Crucial for the calculation of the EEDI is the “reference speed”, which is determined during the model test. Also for pre-EEDI ships the “reference speed” can be determined from available model test reports. If the report is not present a conservative estimation on statistical basis has to be conducted. Using old Sietas ships, it was shown that available model test reports affect the attained index positively. Now the question arises whether the smaller discrepancy with the required index has a decisive advantage over the measures to be taken. Therefore, possibilities to achieve the required EEXI and the influence of already existing model test reports are shown here.
