Abstract: More container losses, following environmental damage and even injured humans during the last years show the need of more precise prediction of a manageable or risky seaway. A fast and accurate enough evaluation of the incoming seaway and the response of the ship is the natural roll period. Full scale measurements on board of a ferry were carried out. The resulting roll periods are compared to calculations in deep and shallow water. Due to larger ships sailing in areas with restricted water depths the shallow water effects should also be considered for calculating roll periods.
