Abstract: This paper shows how the problem of coupling different software systems was solved within the project Gas Engine Performance. The task was to investigate how the engines and electrical system behave in detail under realistic manoeuvring conditions of a ship. For this purpose, a bridge simulator was used, which allows to perform manoeuvres in real-time with look and feel as nautical personnel are used to. For this, it was necessary to couple software systems as different as a purely Unix-based manoeuvring tool, with a Windows-based Simulink software and the Unity-based VR Engine. The paper describes how synchronization of parallel running systems with different time scales is handled and how the physical coupling of the bridge simulator is done with tools that were originally planned as desktop-only applications.
