PhD student and postdoc positions

... at the Insitute for Quantum Inspired and Quantum Optimization.

Basic requirements: completed scientific university studies, in particular in the subject area/s physics, mathematics, computer science, or comparable; excellent grades are expected; prior rigorous mathematical training is required.

Positions 1:

Research topic: quantum algorithms for estimating properties of quantum many-body systems for quantum chemistry. The research will focus on the estimation of ground state properties of such systems.

A close collaboration with Covestro (Christian Gogolin) is anticipated.

Your profile

  • Advanced knowledge in at least one of the topics: classical signal processing theory, randomized quantum measurements (a.k.a. shadow estimation), quantum computing, fermionic systems, quantum chemistry, and quantum error mitigation.
  • Additional knowledge within one or more of the following areas is beneficial: programming skills, representation theory for finite groups, tail bounds for sums of random variables, and tensor networks.

Position 2:

Research topic: quantum computing, in particularly quantum computer readout for energy estimation. The research will focus on the estimation of material science properties and continue our research on ShadowGrouping.

A close collaboration with IQM and Bosch is anticipated.

Your profile

  • Advanced knowledge in at least one of the topics: randomized quantum measurements (a.k.a. shadow estimation), characterization of quantum noise, quantum error mitigation, quantum computing, condensed matter physics, tail bounds for sums of random variables, and martingale theory.
  • Additionally, programming skills are desirable for testing algorithms on quantum hardware.

Our offers

  • Full-time positions for three years. The remuneration is in accordance with 13 TV-L.
  • We provide the opportunity to obtain a PhD or a postdoctoral qualification (habilitation).
  • Benefit from excellent supervision and interdisciplinary exchange with the integration into an excellent research network in the quantum computing landscape.
  • We provide modern office space with the latest hardware allowing for a modern paperless work style (e.g., ThinkPad Yoga X1 + docking station with 4k monitors).
  • For successful members of the institute, an extension of the initial contract is possible.
