The paper “P. Mohr, M. Stark, G. Bauch: Information Bottleneck receivers for ISI Channels” received a best paper award of the IEEE International Conference on Communications, which took place May 16-20, 2022 in Seoul, South Korea. ICC is a flagship conference of the IEEE Communications Society with about 2500-3000 participants.

On October 26, 2021, Mustafa Muhamed Talat Ali Muhamed Emara successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis Spatiotemporal Analysis of Wireless Internet of Things Networks. The Ph.D. examination committee was formed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Rolf-Rainer Grigat (Institute of Vision Systems) and the reviewers Prof. Dr.-Ing. Gerhard Bauch, Prof. Marco di Renzo, Ph.D., (Université Paris-Saclay), and Prof. Hesham ElSawy, Ph.D., (King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM), Saudi Arabia).

Gerhard Bauch, head of the Institute of Communications was elected as Vice President Mobile Radio of the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society.

On September 23, 2021, Maximilian Stark successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis Machine Learning for Reliable Communication Under Coarse Quantization. The Ph.D. examination committee was formed by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Alexander Kölpin (Institute of High-Frequency Technology) and the reviewers Prof. Dr.-Ing. Gerhard Bauch, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Volker Kühn (University of Rostock), and Richard Wesel, Professor at UCLA Samueli School of Engineering, LA.

Jan Lewandowsky received the Sick award for his phd thesis „The Information Bottleneck method in Communications.” The online award ceremony with participation of the donator Renate Sick-Glaser as well as the SICK foundation board member Wolfgang Bay took place on July 13, 2021.
